Performance of FRP strengthened full-scale simply-supported circular hollow steel members under monotonic and large-displacement cyclic loading

Steel structures are becoming more common in engineering construction as steel possesses excellent ductility, but members often vulnerable to buckling, especially under seismic or cyclic loading. Hollow structural sections (HSS) buckle locally loading due their thin walls and the need for rehabilitation strengthening is increasing. In present study, circular hollow section (CHS) have been strengthened with both carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) glass (GFRP). Their performance, along that of bare counterparts, investigated subjected monotonic quasi-static large-displacement experimentally. The types FRP reinforcement (CFRP GFRP) condition (monotonic cyclic) chosen two main parameters test program. Results reveal significant improvements CHS ultimate moment capacities beams enhanced by 51.0% 35.4% respectively CRFP 43.3% 31.5% GFRP compared beam. addition, all specimens achieved higher capacities, rotational stiffness, energy dissipation ductility comparison counterparts. Moreover, there a good agreement found between experimental theoretically predicted CHSs mean ratio 1.04 COV 0.05.
